Following extensive work with Cambridgeshire County Council and the successful completion of road safety audits, technical approval has been granted for the cycle improvements planned for Milton. Work started on 11 July 2022, with the most disruptive work anticipated during the school Summer holidays, when traffic is anticipated to be lighter.
The cycle improvements will be completed in three sections:
- North Section: covering north of the Footgolf to north of Milton Hall.
- Mid Section: covering, north of Milton Hall to south of the High Street junction.
- South Section: covering north of Barnabas Court to south of Coles Road.
Each section will require clearance of the existing signs and services to enable the works to take place; the installation of new kerbing, paving, drainage and layout; and the addition of new signage, bollards and marking.
Bruce Callander, Communications, Communities and Partnerships for master developer Urban&Civic, said: “The Milton works are the latest phase of works to the shared use path along the A10 to improve sustainable transport links for residents in neighbouring villages and those moving into the new Waterbeach development.
“These works will integrate with the other improvements to the A10, including the new toucan crossing completed last month and the bridge over the A10 that is due to be installed early next year for use by cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders.
“We know there will be some minor disruption to the village while the works are carried out. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience in advance and hope the improvements will benefit existing as well as future residents.”
The work is being carried out by Breheny Civil Engineering, who will require traffic management systems to be put in place at key times during the works. This will start with the full closure of Ely Road, A10 junction and slip road to Cambridge Footgolf Centre from 12 to 29 July 2022. Road diversions will be in place and signage provided.
Additional road closures will also be required as work progresses along the route, with all future traffic management phases controlled by 2/3way traffic lights. Initial signs providing prior notice of these works went up in early July, and additional signage will be added as the works progress.
